Manual Handling Course

Manual Handling of loads means any transporting or supporting of a load by one or more employees and includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load, which, by reason of its characteristics or of unfavourable ergonomic conditions, involves risk, particularly of back injury, to employees. Ref: Section 68 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007

Manual Handling injures accounted for 33% of injuries in 2011 and 35% in the healthcare sector in 2011. Ref: Summary of Workplace Injury, Illness and Fatality Statistics 2010 - 2011, HSA website.

Effect of serious injuries due to manual handling are:

  • Loss of income
  • Physical disability (temporary or permanent)
  • Isolation and depression

This course complies with Health and Safety legislation, more importantly it educates participants as to the benefits of good manual handling and trains them in the most up to date manual handling practices.
