Become a Certified Transport Manager

If you want to pursue a career in transport, unlock your potential and gain a recognised qualification then you should consider sitting a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Transport Management.

This Certificate, which is awarded by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, qualifies you as a Transport Manager and also entitles you to set up a haulage or bus passenger business.

A CPC is also extremely beneficial for employment opportunities, career advancement, or if you want to up skill. You may also be entitled to funding for the course from your local FAS or Local Employment Offices.

Subjects covered in the course include: managing a transport business; employment health and safety legislation; contract law and financial management; tachograph legislation; national and international documentation etc.

Life long qualification NO Refresher required

There are 3 exams Feb, June & Nov ADTA caters for all three exams.

COURSE OUTLINE

The course covers the requirements for both passenger and haulage operations. Where a more detailed explanation is required for passenger and haulage operations, the chapters in the manual are split into distinctive sections to reflect these needs. The Course covers the essential requirements for those wishing to set up a transport business. It is divided into nine distinct chapters based on the following format:

A brief summary of the main chapters is included below.

Setting up a Road Transport Business
This chapter examines what the candidate needs to know prior to setting up a transport business. Issues covered are marketing, developing a business plan, decision-making factors, financial considerations, business ownership, obligations upon transport operators and consequences of bankruptcy.

Access to the Road Passenger Market
This chapter covers what the legal requirements are in setting up a business and getting access to the road passenger market. The issues of professional competence, good repute and financial standing are covered so that candidates are aware of what is required by the Department of Transport and the Marine when applying for a Road Passenger Transport Operators Licence. The organisation of the market is also broken up into its distinctive features, scheduled and unscheduled operations, hiring of vehicles, school transport services and competition from non-Irish operators. The issue of community licences and competition is also discussed.

Transport Operations Management (Passenger)
This section examines the main issues in managing a road passenger business. It includes sections on selecting the vehicle, insurances, documentation for driver and vehicle, carriers liability, medical treatment abroad, accident procedures, the role of information technology in managing road passenger transport services and organisation of work, operating efficiency and fuel economy.

Financial Management
This chapter provides students with the main financial information required when setting up and running a business. It also covers basic accounting information on keeping accounts, balance sheets, financial analysis, depreciation, costing, pricing, cost allocation, budgeting and managing cash flow. Other areas covered include, road user charges, cheques, methods of payment, renting, and factoring. There is also a section covering invoicing and incoterms, fares and pricing.

Technical Standards (Passenger)
As in haulage operations, this section deals with the specific harmonisation issues dealing with passenger vehicles. Areas covered include: EU type approval, vehicle weights, dimensions and design, technical standards, vehicle selection, vehicle maintenance, drivers´ instructions for checking compliance, registration and technical inspection, noise and air pollution and preparation of maintenance plans.

Civil, Commercial and Social Legislation
This chapter focuses on the social issues concerned with road transport. Areas covered include employers´ social security obligations, work contracts, obligations of the parties, working conditions and working hours, paid leave, remuneration, breach of contract, working time directive, main types of contract used in road transport, conditions of carriage, contract, agency and carriers liability in tort, consumer rights, employment health & safety legislation, driver qualifications, compliance with traffic regulations, compensation for loss or damage to goods, claims for injury to passengers and damage and loss of baggage.

Conventions and Documentation
This chapter examines the various conventions and documents in use in transport in both passenger and haulage operations in Ireland and abroad. Areas covered include: the CMR Convention, CVR Convention, ADR Convention, ATP Convention, Single Administrative Documents (SAD), TIR Carnets, Temporary exportation, importation of sales, display goods and professional equipment, Carnet de Passage en Douane and other Customs documentation, transit agreements and road user charges.
